Elizabeth Milbank Anderson was an art collector, philanthropist and public health advocate who inherited wealth from her banker father Jeremiah Milbank (1818-1884) who was also one of the founders of Borden Condensed Milk Company. Anderson established the Memorial Foundation in 1905 and in 1921 it changed its name and is known today as the Milbank Memorial Fund. Her collection included artwork by American, European, and the French Barbizon School artists and included work by, among others, Sir Thomas Lawrence, John Singer Sargent, Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Edwin Austin Abbey , Boughton, George Henry Boughton, and John W Alexander. Some of the work in her collection was sold via American Art Galleries in NYC, February 1922. Elizabeth Milbank Anderson was married to Abraham Archibald Anderson (1846–1940) in 1887 and had one daughter, Eleanor Anderson Campbell (1878–1959, née Eleanor Milbank Anderson). |
