historical notes Chicago meat-packing heiress, Dr. Ruth Morris Bakwin, was an art collector and pediatrician. She and her husband, Dr. Harry Bakwin (m. 1925), built an art collection that included work by, among others, Van Gogh (Madame Ginoux, Sotheby’s $40 million), Matisse, Cézanne, Gauguin, Modigliani, and Picasso.

The Bakwin’s lent work to benefit exhibition with both the Duveen Brothers (Renoir, 1941, benefiting French Relief) and Wildenstein (Renoir, 1950).
