historical notes William P. Wilstach made his fortune in the saddlery hardware business and retired at age forty eight and spent the rest of his life collecting art with his wife, Anna.

Their collection formed part of the Fairmount Park Commission art Gallery at Memorial Hall which was built for the centennial and later became the Philadelphia Museum of art.

According to The Art Treasures of America, Wilstach owned works by A. Achenbach, O. Achenbach, C. Becker, J. Breton, A. Cabanel, J. B. C. Corot, N. Diaz, E. Fromentin, J. L. Gérôme, C. F. Lessing, H.
