historical notes Born in Detroit, MI, Lawrence Fleischman was an art collector, philanthropist, dealer, and one of the founders of the Archives of American Art.

Together with his wife, Barbara, he formed a collection of American art including work by, among others, Copley, Bierstadt, Church, Rembrandt Peale, the Hudson River School, Homer, Ryder, Eakins, Burchfield, Marin, Shahn, and Max Ernst.
