historical notes Widener was an art collector and Philadelphia businessman. He served as Philadelphia City Treasurer (1873), founding organizer of U.S. Steel and the American Tobacco Company.

Widener’s collection included paintings by Rembrandt as well as works by then new artists Edouard Manet and Auguste Renoir.

Widener lent the following artwork to the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, 1909:
