historical notes Charles Tyson Yerkes was an art collector, philanthropist, financier, and railway magnate. Yerkes collected paintings, tapestries, decorative arts, sculpture, and left the collection to MMA.

He owned a Frans Hals' "Portrait of a Woman," which now resides in the Frick Collection. Henry Clay Frick purchased the painting from the Charles Yerkes sale for $137,000.
