historical notes Collector, industrialist (Deering Harvester Company) and amateur artist. His younger brother James Deering (1859–1925) was also a collector. He was married twice; his first wife, 1875, Anna Case who died one year later, and Marion Whipple, in 1883, (1857-1945).

His collection included paintings, sculptures, prints, and rugs. His collection included work by John Sargeant and Augustus St. Gaudens. He belonged to both the University and Union Clubs of New York.
