historical notes Riggs was a Washington banker, one of founders of Corcoran & Riggs banking firm (later Riggs & Company), and collector of art, Americana and manuscripts.

In 1840, he married Janet Madeleine Cecilia Shedden, the daughter of Thomas Shedden of Glasgow, Scotland. They had nine children.

Riggs was a trustee of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and of the Peabody Education Fund, treasurer of the Mt. Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union.
