historical notes Alexander J. Cassatt was a collector and businessman who served as the president and vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad (vice president, 1880-1882, and president, 1899-1906).

His sister, Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), was an impressionist painter art consultant. She assisted Alexander in his art and decorative art purchases.

Cassatt owned and lent work by, among others, James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
