historical notes Jacob H Schiff was an art collector, financier, and philanthropist.

One of his most well known accomplishments was the formation of the Northern Securities Co., a holding company into which Edward H. Harriman, Kuhn, Loes (Mrs. Schiff's father), James J. Hill, and J.P. Morgan had placed their stock holdings in the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Chicago, Burlingotn, and Quincy railroads. This combine was dissolved in 1902 as a result of Roosevelt's anti-trust legislation. Among many other ventures, Shiff arranged financing for the construction of railroads in Mexico, secured $200 million for the Japanese in 1904 in their war against the Russians, and participated actively in the American banking consortium in China. Schiff was an imigrant from Germany and maintained unyielding support for the International, as well as the American, Jewish community throughout his life (retrieved 4/14/2008, http://www.nga.gov/cgi-bin/pbio?551331).

Schiff's collection consisted of paintings, tapestries, bronze and marble sculpture, silver, Chinese and Japanese bronze and lacquer, and other decorative objects.

The collection included work by Rubens, Van Dyck, Sir Peter Lely, Joost Susterman, David Teniers the Younger, Cornelis Janssen Van Ceulen, Jan Van Govans, Nattier, Corot, Jean Jacques Henner, and Jean Francois Millet.

A sale of the Schiff art collection took place on 7-9 December, 1933 at the American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, New York.
