historical notes Watson was a businessman, lawyer (Watson & Freeman) and art collector.

Included among Watson’s clients were Henry Clay Frick, A. M. Byers, Henry Phipps, Andrew Carnegie, and W. H. Vanderbuilt. Watson was part of a litigation team representing the United States in its purchase of Alaska from Russia.

The Watson collection included work by Van Dyck, Murillo, Monet, Constable, Morland, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Romney, Decamps, Courbet, Corot, Rousseau, Diaz and Troyon.

Part of Watson's collection sold in April 1917 at a New York auction via the American Art Association.
