historical notes David Leavitt (1790-1879) was a New York City art collector, financier, merchant, banker president of the Housatonic Railroad and the National Exchange Bank.

Leavitt was a patron to the artist Emanuel Leutze and many of Leutze's paintings, including that of Washington at Valley Forge, were initially in Leavitt's collection housed at his Great Barrington estate.
