historical notes Cyrus W. Field was an entrepreneur, art collector, patron and was instrumental in the installation of the trans-Atlantic cable.

Cyrus W Field's art collecting encompassed the decorative arts, paintings, drawings and prints. He was a patron of Frederic E Church and his collection included, other than Church, work by Robert Charles Dudley, Henry Colton Shumway, M J Heade, Daniel Huntington and Jasper Francis Cropsey.

In 1892, Field presented his collection of objects, drawings, prints and paintings associated with the laying of the Atlantic Cable to the Metropolitan Art Museum.

Field played an essential role in the Metropolitan Museums acquisition of the Cesnola Collection.
