CommentaryJacob Poppe(n) (Amsterdam 1576-Amsterdam 1624), the son of one of the founders of the VOC, originally from Holstein, was one of the richest men in Amsterdam. He and the brothers Hendrick and Dirck van Os participated in the diking of the Beemster polder. He married Liefgen Goverts Wuytiers (1586-1622) on 29 June 1603. She was the sister of Dirck Govertsz. Wuytiers of R 7663 of Montias2 and of Annetge Wuijtiers of R 7660 who were both buyers at this auction. Jacob Poppen left a total [including real estate property] of f. 920,000 at his death. According to S.A.C. Dudok van Heel, he reverted to the Roman Catholic religion during the course of his life. His children were Catholic. (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, pp. 285-6). His collection was cited by Carel van Mander (M.J. Bok in Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. p. 159). On 25 October 1625, Pieter Egbertsz. Vinck, Dirck Wuytiers, and Jan Baptista de Wael, appeared befpre the Orphan Chamber as guardians over Lysbeth, 10, Jan, 8, and Dieuwer, 6, the three children left by Jacob Poppe, whose mother was Liefgen Goverts Wuytiers (WK 5073/789). On 30 March 1635, joncker Willem van der Wiele, heer van de Werve and Nieuwkerck, who had married Elisabeth Poppe on 3 April 1633 (Elias, Vroedschap pp.288-9) was appointed as substitute guardian over the children (WK 6073/513, fol. 27). On Hendrick Verburgh's guardianship and the suits that arose over the enormous inheritance, see R 7658 of Montias2.
