CommentaryBalthazar van der Veecke (or Vecken), born in Antwerp circa 1573, had been living 12 years in the Verwerijen when he was betrothed on 22 December 1600 to Levina Luycx, born in Antwerp, 20 years old. He was assisted by his uncle Jacob Jacobsz. Hinlopen and she by her brother Robert Luycx (DTB 409/299). The merchant Robert Luycx, born in Antwerp, was first noted in Amsterdam in 1598 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 307). Jacob Jacobsz. Hinloopen, married to Lijnken Jacobs, was the first member of the Hinloopen clan to take on the name. He was the father of Thymen Hinloopen (II), who married Anna van Varlaer; of Jacob Hinloopen, married to Sara de Wale; of Frans Hinloopen, married to Cornelia Oetgens; of Aeltge Hinloopen, married to Bartholomeus Munter; and of Geertruyd Hinloopen, married to Jacques Nicquet. He was apparently the nephew of Thymen Hinloopen (I), who was the guardian of his children after his death (J. van der Waals, De prentschat van Michiel Hinloopen, Exh. Cat. Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, 1988, p. 30). After the death of his first wife, Balthasar remarried on 20 January 1616 with Barbara Cobbaut, 25 years old, assisted by her father Arnout Cobbaut (of R 21250, an important buyer at Orphan Chamber auctions) and Anne Valckenburgh. Balthazar van der Veecke, who invested 1200 f. in V.O.C. shares, was a merchant, known to have dealt in lumber (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 69(1929), p. 689). His account at the Wisselbank in 1611 filled 2 folios (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 123-5). In 1608, Balthasar van de Veken signed the petition to the Vroedschap of Amsterdam calling for the revocation of the prohibition on holding deposits with cashier (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken R.P.G.59(1925)R p.16). Balthasar van der Veecke was the brother of Susanna van der Vecke who was married to Thobias van Immen, a buyer at this auction (R 27197 of Montias2). His niece by marriage, Gertruijd van der Veken, was betrothed to Isaack van Hersbeeck, a creditor of Rembrandt, on 29 April 1620 (DTB 424/215).
