About this Resource

This database, originally created for The Frick Collection’s 1993-1996 four volume print publication of the same title, provides essential bibliographic information on more than 5,000 Spanish artists, including comprehensive lists of alternate forms of artist surnames. It has been widely acclaimed not only as a valuable reference tool but also as a thorough review of scholarly opinion regarding the artistic identities of numerous anonymous masters.

Spanish artists from the fourth to twentieth century: a critical dictionary received generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Getty Grant Program, H. E. Ambassador Manuel Prado y Colón de Carvajal, The Baron and Baronesa Thyssen-Bornemisza, the United States-Spanish Joint Committee for Cultural and Educational Cooperation, La Comisión Nacional del V Centenario del Descubrimiento de América, La Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional, and La Dirección General de Relaciones Culturales, Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores. For detailed information about the history of this project, see the Introductory Remarks from the original publication.
