history Edward Wales Root was an art collector and instructor who lived in Clinton, N.Y. He was married to Grace Cogswell Root (1891-1975) taught art at Hamilton College and was the son of Elihu Root.

Roots collection largely included work by the American avant-garde and included work of his contemporaries such as, Charles Demuth (1883-1935), Edward Hopper (1882-1967), Jackson Pollock (1912-56), Maurice B. Prendergast (1858-1924) and Charles Sheeler (1883-1965) among others.

In 1957, along with his personal art library, he left 227 paintings by 80 American artists to the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute.
