John Woodruff Simpson was an art collector, patron and lawyer (founding member of Simpson, Thacher, & Barnum, now known as Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP). He and his wife, Katherine “Kate” Seney Simpson (d. 1943) formed an art collection together and were patrons of August Rodin. Including a sizeable collection of work by August Rodin the Simpsons owned work by, among others, Peter Paul Rubens, Jean-Charles Cazin, Jean Siméon Chardin, Clodion, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Jacob van Ruisdael, Aelbert Cuyp, and Sir Henry Raeburn. After Mr. Simpson's death, his widow gave many items from their art collection to the National Gallery of Art in D. C. and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Simpson was a member of the Century, Grolier, University, Grolier, Players, Union League and Railroad Clubs and the Downtown and New York Bar Associations. |
