Herbert Leslie Terrell was an art collector and patron, lawyer and businessman (Simmona & Slade, brokerage firm) with interests in the tobacco (American and Continental Tobacco Companies), railroad (Nickel Plate and Chihuahua & Pacific Railroad Companies), mining (Chihuahua, Helena, Croesus Gold, and El Potosl Mining Companies), liquor industries (Manhattan Spirit Company). Terrell was a member Union League, Lotos, University, Riding, Rahsapeague, Atlantic Yacht and Yale Clubs, Ohio and New England Societies, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Metropolitan Opera. He owned Rembrandt's "Portrait of Himself, " Sir Joshua Reynolds's "Lady Frances Finch," and Gainsborough's "Portrait of Isabel Howland," and Hoppner and Regnault's "Automedon and the Horses of Achilles" ("How we Strip Europe of Her Treasures of Art," New York Times, 2/19/1911) Terrell's Rembrandt "Portrait of Himself" was loaned to the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, 1909. |
