James Albert Michener was an art collector, patron, philanthropist, and Pulitzer Prize winning author. Michener was married three times. He married his first wife, Patti Koon, in 1935, it ended in divorce in 1948. His second wife was Vange Nord (married in 1948). Michener met his third wife Mari Yoriko Sabusawa at a luncheon in Chicago and they were married in 1955 (the same year as his divorce from Nord). Michener and his wife Marie assembled a collection of 20th-century American , now housed at the University of Texas, Austin. The collection included, among others, work by Thomas Hart Benton, Hans Hoffman, Marsden Hartley and Brice Marden. The Michener’s Japanese print collection is now housed at the Honolulu Academy of Arts (approximately 6,000 prints). |
