John Taylor Spaulding, known as "Jack”, was a collector and businessman who collected Japanese prints, European and American paintings, and sword-mounts. Spaulding’s collection included over 6,000 Japanese ukiyo-e prints, and works by, among others, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Degas, Fantin-Latour, Sisley, Renoir, Monet, Chardin, Matisse, Bonnard, Bellows, Augustus John, Luks, Kroll, Henri, Lie, Speicher, Kent, Melchers, Homer, Hopper, Cassat, Manet, Gaugin, Goya, Raeburn, Boudin, Vuillard, Derain, and Orpen. Between 1921-1948, John and his brother William, donated more than 8,000 items to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. John was married Marion Coleman in 1927. |
