history |
The Boston Museum of Fine arts holds the bulk of his collection. He is known for his collection of Chinese art. The Hoyt collection includes Chinese and Korean ceramics, Chinese sculpture and bronzes and metal objects, paintings and prints, and other items. Mr. Hoyt was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was the son of Col. James J. Hoyt, a Union Army officer of the Civil War and descendant of Jonathan Edwards, the theologian who played a part in the founding of Princeton University. He traveled extensively in many parts of the world, particularly in the Orient. He devoted himself to collecting Chinese pottery and porcelain pieces, mostly of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. Hoyt sold his earlier collection of Japanese prints at Walpole Galleries, New York, in 1920. |
