James Bowdoin III was a collector, merchant, philanthropist and statesman. Bowdoin's collection included Colonial and American portraits, mainly of his family, a few Italian paintings including and a considerable number of seventeenth-century French, Flemish and Dutch paintings. Bowdoin's collection also included drawings including one masterpiece once attributed to Pieter Bruegel I (now attributed to Master of the Mountain Landscapes). Upon his death he bequeathed to Bowdoin College 70 paintings, 141 drawings, and 11 prints. He also bequeathed over 2,000 volumes to the library and his collection of mineral specimens. |
