Alfred Atmore Pope was a collector, businessman, manufacturer (wool and iron). An early collector of French Impressionism, Pope’s Collection included Japanese Woodblock Prints, American and European prints dating from the 15th to 19th centuries, Chinese and European ceramics, silver, glass, decorative arts, textiles, and objects d’ art. Pope collected paintings by, among others, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Ellen Emmet Rand, Eugène Carrière, Jozef Israëls, William Nicholson, James McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, and sculptors Alexander Stirling Calder and Antoine-Louis Barye. The print collection includes work by Albrecht Dürer, Charles Méryon, Jean-François Millet, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Muriano Fortuny, and others. Pope's collection is on permanent display at Hill-Stead Museum. |
