Marietta Reed Stevens, known as Mrs. Paran Stevens, was a philanthropist, art collector and patron. She was married to Paran Stevens (d. 1872), a New York Hotel and real estate man. In addition to collecting contemporary American and French art Stevens collected Dutch and Flemish masters, French tapestries, decorative arts, engravings and photographs. Her collection included work by WW Story, Meissonier, AB Hoit, Eugena Verboeckhoven, Naterman, Meyer von Bremen, Compte Calix, Alfred Stevens, Bakalowitz, A. Toulmouche, A. Brascassat, V. Lagye, J R Tilton, Anselma, E. Isabey, Adolph Dillens, C. Troyon, Rosa Bonheur, H. Makart, Horace Vernet, H. Merle, P C. Comte, Ary Scheffer, S. Horovitz, Ch. Baugniet, F. Willems, G. Saintpierre, F. Millet, and Thos. Couture. Artwork in Mrs. Stevens collection were sold in November 1895 via the American Art Association and her summer house paintings and decorative arts were sold June 1922, Newport, RI. |
