Heckscher was the grandson of August Heckscher, 1848-1941, a collector, industrialist, real estate developer, and philanthropist. Heckscher married Claude Chevreux, in 1941. Heckscher served as Arts Commissioner, New York City, 1957 - 1962, Director of the Twentieth Century Fund, 1957 - 1967, Special Consultant on the Arts for President Kennedy, 1962 - 1963, and a member of the New York State Council on the Arts, 1965. Heckscher was New York City's Parks Commissioner under Mayor John V. Lindsay (1921-2000, mayor 1966-73). |
