history Eugene Victor Thaw was an art collector, dealer, scholar, and critic.

Diverse in nature, Thaw’s collection included drawings from modern and old masters, American Indian art, ancient Eurasian bronzes, early medieval jewelry, Native American art, architectural models, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century oil sketches, French faience, in addition to paintings, sculpture, and furniture.

Artist represented in the collection included, among others, Rembrandt, Goya, Degas, Delacroix, Picasso and Matisse.
Highlights from the collection were shown at the Morgan library in an exhibition Drawn to Greatness: Master Drawings from the Thaw Collection and was on view September 29, 2017 through January 7, 2018.

Thaw served on the boards of the Morgan Library, the Frick Art Reference Library, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Fenimore Art Museum. He gave works of art to these institutions as well as to the Metropolitan Museum and the National Gallery of Art. Thaw’s gift to the Morgan Library included more than 400 sheets of paper.

Thaw was a founding member of the Art Dealers Association of American, served on the board, and was president from 1970 to 1972. Pierre Matisse (1900-1989) and János Sholz (1903-1993) were two of Thaw’s mentors. Together with his wife, Clare Eddy Thaw (1924-2017), was the founder of the Eugene Victor Thaw Art Foundation (est. 1981).
