James William Alsdorf was a collector, patron, Chicago business executive, exporter and glass manufacturer. He served as chairman of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975 to 1978, the collectors committee of the National Gallery and the board of Dumbarton Oaks in Washington and was a founding member of the board of governors of the Menninger Foundation. With his wife, the former Marilynn Bruder, Mr. Alsdorf operated Alsdorf International Ltd., an export and investment business started in 1911 by his father, Anthony James Alsdorf. Marilynn and James Alsdorf via travel and study amassed a collection that included 20th-century, Greek and Roman, Egyptian, medieval European, and Himalayan, Southeast Asian, Indian, Chinese and Islamic art. The Alsdorfs donated or lent more than 700 works to the Art Institute since 1954, and Mrs. Alsdorf, who studied at the School of the Art Institute, is a past president and current member of the Woman's Board. Mr. Alsdorf was chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1975 to 1978. |
