Joseph Jefferson was an actor, author and collector. 74 paintings from Jefferson's second art collection sold in April, 1906 via the American Art Galleries at Mendelssohn Hall, New York. Among the paintings auction were eight paintings by Anton Mauve including "The Return of the Flock," "Sheep Coming Out of the Forrest," and " The Loggers," Rembrandt's "Portrait of Petronella Buys;" Israel's "Madonna of the Cottage;" A Daubigny's "Evening on the Oise," and "The Horseman" by Corot. Other artists represented in the Jefferson sale were Van Marcke, Kever, R A John Constable, Jean Baptiste Greuze, Adolphe Monticelli, Diaz, Troyon, Thomas Couture, Lawrence K Earle, Francisco José de Goya, Henry Inman, Nicholas Maes, Bernardus Johannes Blommers, R A John Happner, and Frank S Eugene (New York Times, 4/28/1906). Jefferson's first art collection burned in a fire at his summer home, Crow's Nest, in 1893 in Buzzard Bay, MA. All but three paintings were destroyed in the fire, the surviving paintings were by Mauve, Corot and Daubigny. Jefferson was twice married: at the age of 21 in 1850, to actress Margaret Clements Lockyer (1832–1861), whose early death left him with four children; and in 1867 to Sarah Warren, niece of William Warren the actor. |
