Ferdinand Hermann was a collector, banker, and a member of the firm Speyer & Co. Herman collected paintings by old and modern masters. Seventy paintings from the Hermann collection were auctioned in New York at the Plaza by the American Art Association, in 1918, Thomas E Kirby was the auctioneer. Included in the auction were Rembrandt's "Balaam and His Ass" (formerly in the Galleryie Gustac Ritter Hoschek, currently the painting is at the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris), Gerard Dou's "The Hermit," Hans Muelich's "Portrait of Andreas Reidmohr," and Inness' "Sunset in the Apple Orchard" (signed and dated 1886). Hermann's wife Sara, died in Tarrytown, NY, July 2, 1970, she was 62 years old. Hermann lent Aert van der Neer's "Moonlight," to the Hudson Fulton Celebration, 1909 (this painting sold in auction in 1918, for $425, the agent Bernet). |
