Collector, philanthropist, oil man, founder and chairman of General American Oil. The Meadows Collection, now residing at the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, ranges from early Renaissance works, painted at the end of the 15th century, to modern works by Picasso and Juan Gris. 19th- and 20th-century French painting and Spanish fourteenth to the twentieth centuries Auction: Christie's October 1982. Paul Gauguin's ''The House of Songs,'' an oil-on-burlap landscape from 1892 (up to $1 million), and Pierre Auguste Renoir's ''Seated Bather,'' from 1882, an oil on canvas that marked his return to nude painting. Paul Cezanne's ''Mrs. Cezanne Wearing a Striped Dress,'' The Meadows Museum, founded in memory of his first wife, Virginia Garrison Stuart (1901-1961), reflected Meadows’s desire to establish a museum of Spanish art in Texas. Meadows was married to the former Elizabeth Boggs Barthalow at the time of his death. The Meadows Museum features an Elizabeth Meadows Sculpture Court and Garden in honor of his second wife. |
