history Dorothy Vogel a librarian and her postman husband, Herbert Vogel, amassed a vast collection of minimal, post-minimal, and conceptual prints, drawings, photographs, paintings, and sculpture.

The Vogel collection includes work by more than 170 contemporary artists such as, Will Barnet (b. 1911), Robert Barry (b. 1936), Lynda Benglis (b. 1941), Dan Graham (b. 1942), Sol LeWitt (1928–2007), Robert Mangold (b. 1937), Sylvia Plimack Mangold (b. 1938), Edda Renouf (b. 1943), Pat Steir (b. 1940), and Richard Tuttle (b. 1941).

The couple made their first purchase, a sculpture by John chamberlain, the year they married, 1962. Although they have donated/promised 1,100 works of art from their collection to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC., more works of art are gifted to a 50 x 50 project (50 works of art in 50 states) the couple continues to collect.
