Alex Hillman was an art collector and book publisher. With his wife, the former Rita Kanarek, Hillman amassed a collection of 19th and 20th century European art. The Hillman collection included work by Manet, Toulouse-Lautrex, Degas, Cézanne, Soutine, Modigliani, Utrillo, and the school of Paris, including Picasso, Matisse, Braque and Miró. He established the Alex Hillman Family Foundation, a private foundation in Manhattan, to oversee his collection. Hillman donated work to the Yale University Art Gallery, was a member of the art advisory group of the Dartmouth College Council on Creative Arts, and a member of the visiting committee to the art department of the Fogg Museum at Harvard University. Hillman was the president and a director of North River Securiteis, 1954-60; the Trade Bank and Trust Company, 1951-56; Henry Holt & Co., 1946-1954; F.H. McGraw & Co., 1956-63, and chairman of the board of C. & E. Layton of London, process engravers. |
