Emma Alexander Sheafer was the daughter of the banker, James Strange Alexander (1865-1932). In 1914, she married Lesley G. Sheafer, a stockbroker with the firm of Jesup & Lamont; she was of Scottish ancestry, while her husband had German ties. They spent their summers in Germany, where they bought many of the objects in their collection. Mrs. Sheafer continued to collect after her husband's death in 1956, and at her death in 1973 at the age of 82, she left a collection of fine German and French mid-18th century furniture, porcelain and silver, and American and French paintings to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
