*As a teenager Hirschl worked for his uncle, Frederick Frazier, who ran a paintings gallery in Manhattan. In 1938 he opened his own art gallery which specialized in 19th-century American paintings, particularly the Hudson River and Ash Can Schools. After three years he closed his gallery and became the manager of the John Levy Gallery, where he stayed until in 1952, when he and Abraham Adler cofounded the Hirschl & Adler Gallery. Until the 1970’s, the Hirschl & Adler gallery carried work from old master paintings to contemporary art, since then it has been best known for its holdings in American art. *Taken from gallery's website |
