Alexander Crombie Humphreys was an art collector, patron, engineer, educator and the president of Stevens Institute of Technology. He collected work by American artist and his collection included paintings by Thomas Eakins, Carlton T. Chapman, Frederick S. Church, Winslow Homer, George Fuller, J. Francis Murphy, Thomas Moran, Theodore Robinson, Alexander Wyant, George Inness, Twatchtman, Louis Dessar, Henry R. Ranger, George Fuller, Robert C. Miner, Paul Dougherty, and William Morris Hunt among others. Humphreys was a clubman and was a member of, among others, the Lotos (served as president), Society of Art Collectors, Engineers (served as president), Lawyers, Union League and University Clubs. In 1917, 77 pictures from his collection sold in an auction held at the Hotel Plaza by the American Art Association. |
