Otten and his wife, Mildred Berney Otten (1911-2001), collected European art from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, with an emphasis on art from Germany.

The collection included paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. The collection ranges from landscapes and figure studies to still lifes. Included are works by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Hans Arp, Edvard Munch, Emile Nolde, and Max Pechstein.

Otten left Germany in 1937, and immigrated to the United States in the 1940's forming a pig iron and steel import-export business in New York City.
