history Messmore was an art dealer with M. Knoedler & Co, according to the New York Times, he joined the firm in 1898 (New York Times, OBIT, 1975).

In 1928 Roland F. Knoedler, son of the Founder, Michel Knoedler, retired and Messmore along with three associates acquired the business. At Mesmore's retirement in 1971 he was Knoedler's Chairman Emeritus.
