history Franz Robert Stenzel was a Portland physician, art collector and authority on early art of the Pacific Northwest. He married Kathryn Mathison in 1951.

He wrote two books: Cleveland Rockwell, Scientist and Artist (Portland, Or.: Oregon Historical Society, 1972) and James Madison Alden, Yankee Artist of the Pacific Coast (Fort Worth: Amon Carter Museum, 1975).

Stenzel’s collection included works by, among others, Alfred T. Agate, John mix Stanley, Montana Charlie Stobie, Peter Tofft, Felix O. C. Darley, E. T. Coleman, and Ransome Gillette Holdregde.

In 1997, a collection of 1,600 volumes, 53 oil paintings, 300 works on paper and hundreds of prints were donated to the Yale Collection of Western Americana.
