John Frederick Braun was a manufacturer, concert singer, art collector, and a patron of music and art. Braun was the head of Pennsylvania Lawn Mower Works, manufactured leather, cement and other products. Braun and his wife Edith collected American Art including work by John Singer Sargent, George Inness, Whistler, George Bellows, and Gilbert Stuart. Braun's collection included landscapes, marines, portraiture, figure subjects and still life. In 1929, he donated a collection of 121 works of art by Joseph Pennell, included were etchings, lithographs, and drawings. He was married to the former Edith Evans, a pianist, who he married in 1920. Braun served on the board of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association, president of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and a member of the board of the Presser Foundation and the Pennsylvania Museum. |
