Percy Selden Straus was a merchant (R. H. Macy & Co.) and art collector. He married the daughter of a Brooklyn department store founder (Abraham and Straus), Edith Abraham Straus, in 1902. Together they formed an art collection of European paintings spanning the 13th - 19th centuries which was left to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 1944 (pledged in 1941). The Straus collection comprised of 82 works of art and included examples of Flemish, Sienese, Florentine, Ferrarese, Venetian, German, and English origin. Straus belonged to the Council of Foreign Relations, Harvard of Boston and New York, Century, Metropolitan of Wahsington, D.C. and Westchester Country Clubs. |
