Thomas Agnew & Sons was established by Thomas Agnew in Manchester in 1817, it opened its London gallery in 1860. Some of Adnew’s clients included, among others, Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh (1847-1927), Alfred Beit (1853-1906), Alfred (1842-1918) and Ferdinand de Rothschild (1839 -1898), Paul Mellon (1907 -1999), Norton Simon (1907-1993), the Samuel Kress Foundation, and the National Gallery, London. In 2013, Agnew’s was purchased privately and is now run by Lord Anthony Crichton-Stuart (former head of Christie’s Old Master paintings department, NY).
