history Charles Alexander Loeser was and art collector, critic, Italian and French art expert, and the son of Frederick Loesser, the founder of the Brooklyn department store.

Loeser bequeathed a portion his collection to the Fogg Art museum at Harvard University (262 old master drawings); 8 Cézanne paintings to the United states, two of which were on view in the Green room of the White house in 1961; and the rest of the collection was left to the city of Florence and housed at the Torri Gattaia (Old master paintings removed from the Torri Gattaia were sold at Sotheby's, London, on 9 December 1959).

He and his family, wife, Olga Liebert Loeser and daughter, Matilda Sofia Loeser, had lived in Florence from 1997 and at the time of Loeser’s death in 1928.
