history John Nicholas Brown was an art collector, heir to a family fortune (father, John Nicholas Brown, 1861-1900), who held cultural offices under the administration of President Roosevelt (1933, head the Rhode Island division of the Public Works Administration) and special cultural advisor to General Eisenhower.

Brown established the Medieval Academy of America and began to collecting Old Master drawings and paintings while attending Harvard University in the 1920’s. Later his collecting interests turned to modern art.
