John Smith Phillps was a collector and businessman whose business escapades ranged from Sugar Refining, a Cotton Waving Factory (Lewis, Phillips, and Company), and insurance. Phillips collected drawings and prints spanning the 1470’s to 1870’s, though most were European he did collect some American prints. He left his collection prints and drawings to the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts and his conchological collection its cases and books to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia In addition to his art collection and money for its preservation, Phillips left sales catalogues to the Pennsylvania Academy, most of which were annotated and from the auction house of Rudolph Weigel and dated mid 1850’s to 1870’s. |
