history |
William Mead Ladd was a banker, founder of the Ladd & Tilton bank of Portland, served as Portland’s mayor, amateur photographer and art collector. Ladd served on the board of the Portland Art Association (later the Portland Art Museum) from 1903 to 1926. Together with his wife, Mary Andrews Ladd (ca.1860-1941), he formed a collection of both European and Japanese prints. Their collection included work by, among others, Albrecht Dürer, Francis Seymour Haden, Robert Sterl, Edgar Chahine, Harunobu, Utamaro, Ch ki and Eishi. The Ladd’s sold their collection of European etchings (5,000 prints) to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. In 1932, an anonymous donor gave the Mary Andrews Ladd Collection (750 prints) to the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon. |
