Rufus Ellis Moore was an art collector, artist, engineer, surveyor, and architect. Moore began collecting oriental art objects in 1857, his collection sold via the Anderson Galleries in 1919. Moore’s collection was on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for seventeen years, being withdrawn when John Pierpont Morgan’s (1837–1913) collection was exhibited there. Moore was a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Lotos Club, and the Dutch Reformed Church. He was associated with James F. Sutton (1843–1915) in organizing the American Art Gallery exclusively for American art. His parents were Don Lorenzo Bentevolee Voughley Moore (1816–1865) and Sarah Catherine Gay Moore (1821–1904). |
