Betty Noyce was an art collector, philanthropist, and former trustee of the Portland Museum of Art. Noyce’s collection included work by George Bellows, Abraham Walkowitz, Alan Magee, three generations of the Wyeth famiy (Jamie Wyeth, N.C. Wyeth, and Andrew Wyeth), Alfred Thompson Bricher, Alvan Fisher, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, Fitz Hugh Lane, Frederic Church, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Neil Welliver, Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, Ross Sterling Turner, and Winslow Homer. In 1996, Noyce bequeathed her American art collection to four Maine museums: the Portland Museum of Art, The Farnsworth Art Museum, the Maine Maritime Museum, and the Monhegan Museum. Along with Mrs. Noyce's museum gifts she made charitable gifts to non-profit institutions totaling between $50 million and $75 million. Noyce was married to Robert Noyce (1927-1990), who was credited with the invention (along with Jack Kilby) of the integrated circuit or microchip, cofounder Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957, and Intel in 1968. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1975, and as a result of the settlement Elizabeth received half of the couples assets. |
