history Franke (1900-1976) worked with I.B. Neumann in Berlin 1918-23. In 1923 Neumann opened the Munich branch of his gallery, and left for New York, leaving Franke remained in charge of charge of the Munich gallery and Karl Nierendorf in charge of the gallery in Berlin.

The Gallery operated under the name of Neumann and Franke until ca. 1937, when it became known as the Galerie Günther Franke. Franke specialized in the German Expressionists, hiding their works during the Nazi era.
