Donald Baird Marron, Lightyear Capital's founder, Chairman, and CEO, was an art collector, philanthropist, and financier. Marron served as president (1985) and Chairman of the Museum of Modern Art's board of trustees (joined in 1975), and assisted in raising more than the $1 billion needed for the museum's redesign—MoMA's atrium is named in his honor, The Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium. He also served as a trustee of Memorial Sloan-Kettering and New York University. Marron’s collecting began with paintings by artists from the Hudson River School, and frew into a major collection of modern and contemporary art. The collection included work by, among others, Cy Twombly, Willem de Kooning, Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Mark Grotjahn, Gerhard Richter, Leger, Miró, Brice Marden, Ed Ruscha, Mark Bradford, Ellsworth Kelly, Brice Marden, Jonas Wood, Albert Oehlen, Richard Prince, Laura Owens, Christian Marclay, Djordje Ozbolt, and Harmony Korine. He fostered relationships with prominent art dealers and regularly purchased from Larry Gagosian and Leo Castelli. In addition to building his collection, Marron, while serving as Chairman and CEO for PaineWebber, (1980-2000, later USB), was responsible for building the corporation's. During his tenure, the company acquired over 850 works by artists such as Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning, Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter, and others. Marron and his first wife, Gloria, had two children together, Jennifer Ann and Donald B. Jr. He had two more children with his second wife, Catherine "Catie" Marron, Serena, and William. |
